30 January, 2020

You will have observed that the outbreak of 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCov) is escalating globally. Senior leaders from across KAUST continue to meet regularly to adapt to the evolving situation and ensure an appropriate response to the outbreak, using the best information available.

The latest updates as of January 30, 2020 are as follows:

There are no confirmed cases at KAUST or in Saudi at this time.

High-risk regions

KAUST is maintaining a list of high-risk regions, which is being updated regularly. There are updates to this list today, to include Jiangsu Province (China), Bangkok (Thailand), Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, and Singapore. The complete list can be found at kh.kaust.edu.sa/coronavirus

Quarantine

Quarantine has now become a standard practice in many areas around the world, to support outbreak prevention. As of January 30, there are more than 50 KAUST community members who are currently in quarantine because they meet certain risk criteria. This does not mean that  2019-nCoV has reached KAUST – it is simply a precautionary measure. Quarantine is not optional and is being strictly enforced.

Information for quarantined individuals can be found in this information sheet, which is also available in Chinese. Provisions are in place to support quarantined individuals.
