08 April, 2018

In light of recent news of confirmed scabies cases in Makkah, we encourage you to take a moment to learn about the disease and what you can do to protect yourself and your family.

What is scabies?

Scabies is a treatable skin infection caused by a mite. It appears in the form of skin bumps with severe itching. It can spread easily in crowded conditions where close body and skin contact is frequent and prolonged.

How is scabies treated?

Scabies is treated with topical creams that can kill the mites, which are available on prescription from KAUST Health. Treatment is also recommended for people and items that have been in close contact with the patient.

If you suspect that you or someone in your family may have scabies, visit a Family Medicine Consultant for consultation, diagnosis and treatment.
